A sensor campaign was conducted in Milan as part of the H2020 project ICARUS (Integrated Cli- mate forcing and Air pollution Reduction in Urban Systems) in order to characterize the exposure to ma- jor air pollutants of the urban population. The cam- paigns involved more than 100 participants from over 30 households. Utilizing spatio-temporal data on air pollution and activity data collected from in- dividuals, we were able to identify individual expo- sure profiles and summarize the information accord- ing to specific microenvironments and activities. All participants received personal exposure reports. The paper summarizes the general experience with con- ducting sampling campaigns in Milan, focusing on the following aspects: sensor selection and evalua- tion, study design, data harmonization, establish- ment of the supporting information technology infra- structure, and overall feasibility assessment, including participant feedback.
