Abstract

We propose that (a-c) could be possible features of the human parsing. The top-down (i.e. expectation driven) approach, when augmented with three simple modifications, provides an elegant way to explain their grammatical properties and thus moves us one step closer to a unified theory of competence-performance that is suitable both for comprehension and production modeling. The most complex constructions in our corpus led the parser to unrealistic garden-pathing, however, suggesting a possible direction for future improvement.
